As we transition from the heat of summer to the cool, crispness of fall, our wardrobes naturally change, as does our skin, because of the cooler temperatures. A fresh approach to what we wear, whether it be clothing or makeup, can be thrilling, as it offers an opportunity to see ourselves in a fresh and exciting new way and to celebrate who we are at the moment. Each new season comes with suggested fashion and beauty trends, but what’s most important is how they positively affect your fabulous physical uniquenesses, increasing your physical appeal.
The biggest makeup trends showcased on the runway for fall 2022 were dewy, natural-looking skin, burnt (orangish-bronze) blush on cheeks and under the eyes, pastel colors of eye makeup (particularly blue and particularly matte) paired with red lips (particularly matte), and soft-looking metallic eye makeup with a soft-looking lip color. So how does one employ these trends to maximize one’s physical appeal while also tending to personal beauty needs such as drier fall skin? By focusing on your individual needs first. For example, know your current skin type, which is subject to change with the change of seasons, and choose skin care products for the present needs of your skin, so your skin can be its healthiest. When your skin is healthy, you need little foundation or concealer and can easily enjoy the trend of natural-looking skin. To determine your current skin type, take the skin type test.
SKIN TYPE TEST
Your skin type and needs can change. Pay attention to your skin’s daily and seasonally changing needs, and adjust your skincare products accordingly. Keep a variety of skincare products on hand to keep up with your skin’s changing needs.
To determine what your skin type is today, perform the following test:
STEP 1: Wash your face and pat it dry. Don’t apply any skincare products.
STEP 2: Wait three to four hours.
STEP 3: Blot your skin with blotting paper or tissue.
STEP 4: Observe the blotting paper or tissue.
You're an oily skin type if you see a lot of oil. Those with an oily skin type tend to break out and may have larger-looking pores. You have a dry skin type if you see very little or no oil. Those with a dry skin type may rarely break out and have small-looking pores. You have a combination skin type if you blot a lot of oil from the T-Zone but see very little or no oil when blotting your cheek area. Those with a combination skin type can break out around the hairline and/or on the T-Zone and can have dry skin on the cheek area or elsewhere. If your skin becomes blotchy or irritated easily, you most likely have a sensitive skin type. Any skin type can develop sensitive skin, temporarily or permanently, because of many factors. Perform the skin type test with each change of seasons to make sure that you’re using the correct skin care products for your current skin type.

GET WEARABLE DEWY-LOOKING SKIN NO MATTER YOUR SKIN TYPE
To gain a dewy look for your skin, apply a moisturizer that’s right for your skin type. If your skin isn’t naturally oily, try mixing a couple of drops of a hydrating oil with your moisturizer before applying it, or pat a hydrating oil over your moisturizer for extra dewiness. For combination skin, try patting a hydrating oil onto areas you would apply highlighter, and skip applying it elsewhere. Also, instead of applying powder to set any applied foundation or concealer, blot your skin with a tissue to set your makeup and lift away any excess oil. Blotting your skin with a tissue can be done where needed throughout the day. If your skin is oily, bypass applying a hydrating oil and only apply the powder onto areas of the skin you wouldn’t apply highlighter, and then blot with a tissue, or if you must powder your entire face, blot your skin with a tissue afterward.
CHOOSE YOUR BEST METALLIC EYE MAKEUP COLOR BY KNOWING YOUR SKIN’S UNDERTONE(S)
The color of metallic eye makeup that will work best on you is the color that best harmonizes with your skin’s undertone(s). To determine your skin’s undertone(s), examine the blue veins that run along the inside of your forearm. Do they look more blue/purple, blue/green, or neither/both? If they look more blue/purple, a pink or red skin undertone would be predominant and you would fall under the “cool” category. If they look more blue/green, a yellow, gold, or olive undertone would be predominant and you would fall under the “warm” category. If they look neither blue/purple nor blue/green, or both, you would fall under the “neutral” category.
COOL:
If your skin has a cool undertone, choose metallic silver eye makeup.
WARM:If your skin has a warm undertone, choose metallic gold eye makeup.
NEUTRAL:
If you have a neutral skin tone, choose either metallic gold or silver or a mix of the two for your eye makeup.

CHOOSE YOUR PERFECT NATURAL-LOOKING LIP OR BLUSH COLOR TO PAIR WITH METALLIC EYE MAKEUP
To find your perfect natural-looking blush or lip color to pair with metallic eye makeup, squeeze the end of your finger. The color the end of your finger turns when you squeeze it is the perfect natural-looking blush and/or lip color for you. When shopping for a natural-looking blush or lip color, squeeze the end of your finger and hold the squeezed end up to various blush or lip products to find the ones that match. The ones that match are great choices for you. For fall, choose cream formulations of blush, as they’re more hydrating.
DISCOVER YOUR PERFECT BURNT BLUSH COLOR FOR CHEEKS AND UNDER THE EYES
Once you’ve chosen your perfect natural-looking blush color in a cream formulation, mix this color with blush in an orangish-bronze color in a cream formulation or a bronzer in a cream formulation. Bronzers should be no darker than the shadows you find on your face in natural daylight. The mix of your perfect natural-looking blush color with an orangish-bronze cream blush or cream bronzer can be applied to your cheeks and under the eyes along the lower eyelash line from the roots of your eyelashes to where your eyelashes end.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PASTEL-COLORED EYE MAKEUP FOR YOU
When choosing the right pastel-colored eye makeup for you, decide if you want to bring more attention to your eyes or change their color. Choose complimentary or contrasting eye makeup colors if you want to bring attention to your eyes. The color that’s opposite from your eye color on an artist’s color wheel is your eye color’s “complementary/contrasting” color.
Complementary/contrasting colors are:
Red/Green. NOTE: An easy way to remember this color combination is to think of the holiday Christmas.
Blue/Orange. NOTE: An easy way to remember this color combination is to think of the banner colors for the US sports teams, the New York Mets or the Denver Broncos.
Yellow/Purple. NOTE: An easy way to remember this color combination is to think of the banner colors for the US sports team, the Los Angeles Lakers.

Your eye color’s complementary/contrasting color, plus the colors used to make that color, if more than one color is used to make that color, will create a vibration with your eye color, which adds more interest to your eyes. This interest/vibration phenomenon is known in the beauty industry as making something “pop.” For example, If one has green eyes, eye makeup that contains the color red, such as burgundy or purple, which is the opposite of the color green on an artist’s color wheel, should be chosen. You can also choose eye makeup colors that vibrate with the other non-dominant colors found within your eyes. For example, if you have brown eyes, examine them closely to determine if there are any other colors within them; often, brown eyes contain yellow or amber. If yellow or amber is found within the eyes, choose eye makeup that is the complementary/contrasting color for yellow, purple, amber, or blue.
If you want to choose pastel eye makeup colors that alter the appearance of the color of your eyes, follow these steps:
STEP 1: Look closely at your eyes and notice all the colors within them. Are there any colored speckles? Are there any colored streaks? These colors can be made to appear more predominant looking, which will create the illusion of changing your eye color.
STEP 2: Choose one color you find within your eyes as your eye makeup color. This eye makeup color will create the illusion of removing or “sucking out” that same color found within your eyes, so your eyes look more like the other colors found within them. An example of this is someone with blue eyes with green areas. If a blue eye makeup color is chosen, then that eye makeup color would create the illusion of removing its same color, leaving the green color to look more prominent. The blue eye color would then appear greener.

CHOOSE YOUR IDEAL MATTE RED LIP COLOR TO PAIR WITH PASTEL EYE MAKEUP
There is a perfect red for everyone. To find yours, follow these steps:
STEP 1: Access the depth of your skin tone. How pale or dark are you? This determination will lead to choosing a lip color that harmonizes with the shade depth of your skin tone. Classically, the darker your skin tone is, the darker your lip color should be. For example, if you have a pale skin tone, choose bright red. If your skin tone is
medium in shade depth, choose a red that’s a little darker. If your skin tone is dark, choose deep red, and if your skin tone is very dark, choose dark red.
STEP 2: Look past how pale or dark you are, and determine the most predominant undertone color(s) in your skin. Do you have more yellow/gold/olive in your skin? Equal amounts of yellow/gold/olive and pink/red in your skin? Or more pink/red in your skin? If your skin’s undertone is predominantly yellow/gold/olive, lip colors that are warm with a yellow or gold undertone would be the most flattering, such as the color “tomato red.” If you have a neutral skin tone with neither a predominate yellow/gold/ olive undertone nor a predominate pink/red undertone, neutral lip colors, with equal amounts of both pink/red and yellow/gold, would be the most flattering. If you have a skin tone with a pink or red undertone, then cool lip colors with a pink or red undertone that may sometimes appear a little blue would be the most flattering.
Here are some red lip color suggestions based upon the depth of your skin tone and your skin’s undertone(s):
LIGHT/PALE SKIN TONES:
WARM: Bright red, bright orange-red.
NEUTRAL: Bright true red. COOL: Bright cool red.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES: WARM: Medium coral red. NEUTRAL: Medium brick red. COOL: Medium berry red.
DARK SKIN TONES:
WARM: Deep cinnamon.
NEUTRAL: Deep brick red.
COOL: Deep raspberry, deep burgundy.
DEEP DARK SKIN TONES: WARM: Dark tomato red. NEUTRAL: Dark brick red.
COOL: Dark berry, dark burgundy.
