BRIGHTEN UP YOUR VALENTINE’S DAY WITH HIGHLIGHTER
When applying highlighter products, keep them within a subtle one to three shades lighter than your current skin tone.
HIGHLIGHTER COLOR CHOICES FOR DIFFERENT SKIN TONES:
If you have a dark or deep dark skin tone, don’t use highlighter products that contain a white undertone. They can make your skin appear ashy-looking. Choose instead to use highlighter products that are honey-colored.
LIGHT/PALE SKIN TONES WITH A YELLOW UNDERTONE:
Choose pale champagne colors or ivory/off-white colors that contain pale yellow undertones.
LIGHT/PALE SKIN TONES WITH A NEUTRAL UNDERTONE:
Choose ivory/off-white colors that contain both pale yellow and pale pink undertones.
LIGHT/PALE SKIN TONES WITH A PINK OR REDDISH UNDERTONE:
Choose ivory/off-white colors that contain pale pink undertones and/or pale silver undertones.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES WITH A YELLOW UNDERTONE OR OLIVE UNDERTONE:
Choose champagne colors, pale gold colors, or pale honey colors with pale yellow undertones.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES WITH A NEUTRAL UNDERTONE:
Choose champagne colors, pale gold colors that contain both pale yellow and pale pink/red undertones, or pale honey colors that contain both pale yellow and pale pink/red undertones.
MEDIUM SKIN TONES WITH A PINK OR REDDISH UNDERTONE:
Choose champagne colors, pale gold colors that contain pale pink/red undertones, or pale honey colors that contain pale pink/red undertones.
DARK SKIN TONES WITH A YELLOW UNDERTONE:
Choose gold and bronze colors with yellow undertones or honey colors with yellow undertones.
DARK SKIN TONES WITH A NEUTRAL UNDERTONE:
Choose gold and bronze colors with subtle orange undertones or honey colors with subtle orange undertones.
DARK SKIN TONES WITH A REDDISH UNDERTONE:
Choose gold and bronze colors with subtle rose or red undertones or honey colors with subtle rose or red undertones.
DEEP DARK SKIN TONES WITH A YELLOW UNDERTONE:
Choose bronze colors with yellow undertones, honey colors with yellow undertones, or browns in light-reflective textures, with yellow undertones.
DEEP DARK SKIN TONES WITH A NEUTRAL UNDERTONE:
Choose bronze colors with subtle orange undertones, honey colors with subtle orange undertones, or browns in light-reflective textures with subtle orange undertones.
DEEP DARK SKIN TONES WITH A REDDISH UNDERTONE:
Choose bronze colors with copper or red undertones, honey colors with copper or red undertones, or browns in light-reflective textures with copper or red undertones.
TIPS:
* To test a highlighter product before purchasing it, apply it, turn and tilt your head from side to side while looking into a mirror to see how the product reflects light. A good highlighter product will subtly reflect light. Any highlighter product that’s overly light-reflective will not look natural and isn’t a good choice.
* To create a highlighter product, mix a drop of facial moisturizer, such as Bella Vida Santa Barbara’s award-winning Playa Ocean Mineral Restoring Cream, with a facial makeup product such as an eye makeup color in an appropriate color and texture.
* To highlight the skin without a highlighting product, set your makeup with powder everywhere, except where you desire a highlight to be. The areas that are left unpowdered will reflect light and act as a highlighter.
* In a pinch, you can use a little non-menthol lip balm or clear lip gloss as a highlighter.
APPLICATION TOOLS:
1: Apply all stick, cream, liquid, or gel highlighting or contouring products with a synthetic makeup sponge, a synthetic bristle brush, or clean fingers.
2: Apply all powder-textured highlighting or contouring products with a synthetic makeup sponge, a natural-bristle makeup brush, etc.
NOTE: Choose your makeup brush or tool size for the size of the area you’re going to be applying makeup.
APPLICATION:
Highlighter can be a powerful tool in changing your features. The trick to making highlighter effective and wearable is to:
1: Keep your highlighter texture choices subtle.
2: Blend your highlighter well so there are no lines of demarcation.
3: Apply and/or check your makeup in natural daylight. If your makeup looks great in natural daylight, it will look great no matter what lighting you’re in.
TIPS:
* A good way to remember where highlighting products should go is to apply highlighter products onto any areas you wish were more prominent-looking.
* To create the most natural-looking highlight, apply your stick, cream, liquid, and/or gel highlighting products as understructure after prepping the skin and before applying your other makeup products.
* If you have oily skin, you can create the most natural-looking highlighting effects by following these steps:
STEP 1: Apply a thin layer of facial powder to the skin to set any applied foundation and/or concealer, etc.
STEP 2: Apply your powder-textured highlighting product.
STEP 3: Apply a thin layer of facial powder over your powder-textured highlighting product.
WHERE TO HIGHLIGHT:
Highlighting products should be applied where light naturally hits your facial bone structure, such as the tops of your cheekbones, on the eyelids, and/or on the brow bone/just underneath the eyebrows.
TIP:
* Try a frosty powder-textured eye makeup look to rock the current cool “frosty” winter 2024 makeup trend.
TROUBLESHOOTING:
* If you’ve applied too much of a highlighting product, spritz your skin with a little water and/or facial toner, and pat it down with a tissue until the product lifts and becomes more sheer-looking.

ADD A TOUCH OF SEXY OLD HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR TO AN ELEGANT VALENTINE’S DAY EVENING
Glamourous statement, thick cat eye eyeliner, that pays homage to old Hollywood, is all the rage for winter 2024. Try muted black and deep cinnamon shades for a spicy change from basic black. Complete this nostalgic look with at least two coats of mascara. And don’t forget to add a touch of natural-looking frost bitten “cold girl’ blush or blush in Pantone’s color for this year, “peach fuzz,” if your skin’s undertone is neutral or warm, to cheeks and the tip of your nose, to complete the look.
