DESIGNS AS FRESH AS FLOWERS
The freshest looks for spring 2024 start with Flowers. Ms. Anna Flowers, to be exact.
This fashion designer is a star on the rise and was recommended to me by Tod Hunter Faulk, the founder of Portland Fashion Week, who has had more winners of the TV show Project Runway come from his fashion week than L.A. Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week combined.

In the spirit of seeing Anna bloom to her full potential, I connected her with top NYC stylist and fashion historian & educator Edward Nashen, who’s worked with John Galliano, Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Christian Lacroix, and Jean Paul Gaultier, just to name a few, and who comes from Hollywood fashion royalty stock, as his grandfather designed suits for the film icon Orson Wells.
With the goal of getting master craftsman Ms. Flowers designing at the level of the top names in the industry, Mr. Nashen and Ms. Flowers went to work and were hugely successful in creating luxury pieces that any celebrity would be proud to wear on the red carpet. The one-of-a-kind couture pieces that Ms. Flowers designed and personally created for me using extravagant fabrics are viewable in the images for this article, and yes, I proudly wore them on the red carpet. The response I received was overwhelming.
Everyone loved her beautiful, elegant, expertly crafted, stand out pieces. On working with Ms. Flowers, Mr. Nashen states, “Working with my fashion colleague, Charis Michelsen, who understands great fashion, high style, and has an equal love of beauty is just organic. We have a simpatico and similar aesthetic. Through her and her projects, I have been able to further mentor new designers and talents. It's very fulfilling to work with younger creatives and pay it forward, to move them even further with their work. I have been very fortunate in my career and find it so important to share what I’ve learned.”

Another young designer on the rise is sixteen-year-old Lydia Tingly, who’s already showcased her bold, Balenciaga-inspired work on the runway three times, under her brand name Genesis. Mr. Nashen is currently mentoring her and she’s taken the time to share her experience. She states, “Edward has been instrumental in shaping my journey as a young fashion designer. Through his mentorship, I have learned about different fabrics, their characteristics, and how they can be utilized creatively in fashion design. Additionally, Edward has imparted various fashion techniques that have enhanced the quality and craftmanship of my designs, from pattern making to garment construction. These techniques have not only elevated the quality of my work but have also inspired me to push the boundaries of my creativity.”
She goes on to comment, “Working with Charis Michelsen has been an incredible experience for me as a young fashion designer. Not only has she shared invaluable industry knowledge, but her mentorship and kindness have also significantly influenced my approach to design and business. PAIR FRESH FASHION LOOKS WITH SPRING 2024’S HOTTEST BEAUTY TRENDS
Try mixing fresh fashions for spring with seasonal beauty trends that give your good looks a lift.
PRETTY IN PEACH
For spring 2024, peach tones are popping! Try wearing this delicious color on your cheeks. Nars’ iconic blush in the color Orgasm, is one of the best universal peach-toned blushes period. If your skin’s undertone is cool, or pink/red, which typically looks best with a pink or red-colored blush, try mixing your usual blush color with a peach-toned blush that’s appropriate for the color depth of your skin.
WHERE TO BLUSH
To locate where your blush should be applied to your cheeks:
STEP 1: Relax your face.
STEP 2: Using your fingers, feel where your cheekbones round inward.
STEP 3: Back your fingers up to the highest points before your cheekbones round inward. These highest points are known as the apples of your cheeks.
STEP 4: Touch the highest points of the apples of your cheeks with your index fingers.
STEP 5: With your index fingers on the apples of your cheeks, move your thumbs along your cheekbones to the tops of your ears. The path your thumbs take from the apples of your cheeks to the tops of your ears is where you should apply blush.
NOTE: Imagine a horizontal line that runs across your face at the base of your nose. Don’t apply blush to your cheek area below this line, or it will create the appearance of pulling your face downward.
NOTE: Place two fingers against the side of your nose. Stop your blush at the finger that’s closest to your cheek, or attention will go to your nose.
TIP: Your blush can double as a mid-tone shade for your eye makeup.

Graphic eyeliner is another top trend for spring 2024. Try creating graphic eyeliner looks that maximize classic eyeliner designs, such as thicker eyeliner along the upper eyelash line, to create bold yet beautiful and wearable eye makeup statements.

SHIMMER THIS SPRING
Frosty ice-white eye makeup, which was seen on the runways for spring 2024, brings a perfect effervescent feel to the season and gives a nod to the sixties and early aughts. GIVE THOSE 90S LIPS AN UPDATE
Dark nude 90s lips, which are continuing as a trend for spring 2024, can be freshened up by swapping brown lip products to line the perimeter of the lips with brighter shades, such as red or pink; and instead of filling in the lips with a nude shade, try a paler red or pink for brighter lip looks that pair better with the season. Make sure to subtly blend the line where the two colors meet.
TIP: To create an updated 90s lip look, follow these steps:
STEP 1: Line the perimeter of your lips with a lip color that’s darker than your natural lip color.
STEP 2: Blend the line inwards, towards the center of your mouth, using a lip brush, cotton swab, or clean finger.
STEP 3: Using a lip brush or a clean finger, apply a paler shade of lip color to the center of the mouth.
STEP 5: Blend the paler shade of lip color a little, so there are no lines of demarcation.
