BEYOND THE VILLA: HOW HAUTE RETREATS IS REDEFINING PRIVATE LUXURY TRAVEL

With more than 2,400 personally vetted villas across 83 destinations, Haute Retreats is redefining private travel through human curation, deeply personalized service, and a philosophy that the finest luxury is often the part a guest never sees.

There is a particular moment in exceptional hospitality when service seems to disappear. The car is waiting before anyone asks. The villa feels prepared not merely for guests, but for these guests. Dinner reflects preferences shared weeks earlier. The right room has been chosen for the grandparents, the children’s arrival has already been considered, and a seemingly effortless holiday unfolds without exposing the machinery behind it. This is the territory in which Haute Retreats has chosen to operate.

Founded in 2016 by hospitality executive Sabrina Piccinin, Haute Retreats has grown into a global collection of more than 2,400 fully staffed villas and private estates across more than 83 destinations, from Tuscany and Lake Como to the Amalfi Coast, Turks & Caicos, and the wider Caribbean. Yet scale is not the company’s defining proposition. Haute Retreats deliberately resists behaving like a conventional booking platform, favoring instead a highly personal model in which each traveler is matched with a property by a villa specialist who understands both the destination and the nuances of the stay.

It is a distinction that has become increasingly meaningful in a luxury market saturated with choice. For the most discerning traveler, access alone is no longer enough. What matters is judgment: knowing which villa will actually work for a multigenerational family, which property has the privacy promised by its photographs, which staff will understand the rhythm of a particular guest, and which details need to be handled before the aircraft ever leaves the ground.

“Luxury, at its highest level, is invisible. When something is done truly well, the client never notices the effort.” — Sabrina Piccinin, Founder & CEO

BEYOND THE BOOKING

The language of luxury travel has changed. Privacy remains important, as do extraordinary surroundings, beautiful architecture, and access to places that feel removed from the ordinary. But increasingly, the measure of a great stay lies in everything surrounding the property itself.

Haute Retreats has built its model around that wider experience. The company’s luxury villa collection is supported by bespoke concierge services, private chefs, wellness arrangements, event planning, security, and destination-based experience managers. Through specialist partners, guests may also coordinate yacht charters and private aviation, including private jet services through the company’s partnership with ONEflight International.

The intention is to remove the fragmentation that often accompanies complex private travel. A family moving between several destinations does not necessarily want to coordinate a villa company, aviation provider, chef, local concierge, yacht broker, transportation company, and itinerary planner independently. Haute Retreats instead describes its approach as “wheels-up to pillow”: one coordinated system designed to carry the guest through the entire journey.

For those already traveling, around-the-clock support remains available by phone, WhatsApp, and email. For multi-destination journeys, a single point of contact can remain with the client throughout. It is a model built less around transactions than continuity.

THE WOMAN BEHIND THE EXPERIENCE

Long before Haute Retreats became a global villa company, Sabrina Piccinin had spent more than two decades studying hospitality from the inside out. Her career spans more than 25 years in international hotel and villa leadership, including senior management roles with major brands such as Hyatt, where she developed a reputation for looking at performance through two equally important lenses: the experience of the guest and the experience of the employees responsible for delivering it. According to the company, one such turnaround moved an underperforming property from loss to profitability in fewer than five months, underscoring her belief that exceptional hospitality begins long before the guest arrives.

Piccinin later managed private villa operations in Costa Rica, where the highly individualized nature of residential hospitality became even more pronounced. Unlike a hotel, where systems can be refined around repetition and scale, a private villa stay changes with every property, every household, and every family dynamic. Expectations are often deeply personal, sometimes unstated, and rarely reducible to a standard checklist, which means success depends not only on process but on judgment, intuition, and the ability to understand what a guest is truly asking for.

That philosophy became central to the creation of Haute Retreats. Piccinin recognized that technology could simplify the search for a property, but not necessarily the decision behind it. An algorithm can compare bedrooms, dates, price ranges, ocean views, and amenities, but it cannot easily understand why one family needs space without feeling divided, why another values complete discretion, or why proximity to a village might feel ideal to one traveler and intrusive to another. At the highest level of luxury, the challenge is often not finding more options; it is knowing which option is right.

GROWTH WITH A LIMIT

In a sector where scale is often treated as a measure of success, Haute Retreats has chosen a more deliberate approach to growth. The company states that it will not add more villas to its collection than its team can genuinely know, evaluate, and support, allowing expansion to remain tied to its ability to personally vet properties and stand behind the quality of each stay.

That restraint has become an important part of the brand’s operating philosophy. A larger portfolio may create more choice, but Haute Retreats places greater value on maintaining a level of familiarity with the properties it represents and the partners responsible for delivering the guest experience. According to the company, that approach has contributed to an 80 percent guest return rate, a figure that suggests loyalty is being built not simply around individual villas, but around the confidence clients place in the wider service.

At the upper end of private travel, that trust can become as valuable as the property itself. Guests are often placing significant family time, celebrations, privacy, and complex travel plans into another company’s hands, and reliability becomes its own form of luxury. Returning clients no longer need to begin every stay by explaining preferences from the ground up; over time, the relationship itself becomes part of the experience, allowing service to feel increasingly intuitive, personal, and effortless.

ONE VILLA, THREE GENERATIONS

Among the shifts Haute Retreats is observing in 2026 is the continued rise of multigenerational private travel, particularly among families seeking more meaningful ways to spend extended time together. At the highest end of the market, the private villa is becoming less an alternative to a hotel and more a destination in its own right, offering several generations the ability to gather under one roof without sacrificing privacy or personal space. Haute Retreats reports that multigenerational groups are also driving some of the longest stays, often choosing a single estate for ten days or more rather than moving repeatedly between hotels. The appeal is both practical and emotional. Grandparents, parents, children, and teenagers can move through the same property according to different rhythms, coming together for meals, celebrations, and shared experiences while still having the freedom to retreat when they choose. That balance may be one of the greatest strengths of the villa model. Luxury travel at its best allows people to spend meaningful time together without requiring them to spend every moment together, creating space for both connection and independence. For families whose everyday lives may be divided across cities, countries, or demanding schedules, a shared estate can become more than accommodation; it can become the setting in which memories are formed and relationships are given time to deepen.

THE NEW GEOGRAPHY OF PRIVATE TRAVEL

Haute Retreats’ international portfolio spans a wide range of established luxury destinations, but the company’s own booking data also offers insight into how affluent travelers are choosing to move through the world. Through its proprietary Billionaire Villa Index, Haute Retreats tracks demand at the highest end of the private villa market, offering a seasonal view of destination preference, pricing, and booking behavior. At mid-summer 2026, Tuscany held the top position in the index, followed by Turks & Caicos, Lake Como, and the Amalfi Coast. The presence of three Italian destinations among the four leaders reflects a continued appetite for places where luxury is inseparable from atmosphere, culture, architecture, cuisine, and a strong sense of place. The villa itself may be extraordinary, but the experience extends far beyond its walls. Haute Retreats is also observing a shift in the traditional Mediterranean calendar. September, once regarded primarily as shoulder season, is becoming increasingly attractive to families and private groups seeking warmer seas, quieter destinations, greater privacy, and a more relaxed pace after the intensity of summer. In that sense, exclusivity is becoming less about arriving at the most popular moment and more about understanding when a destination can be experienced at its most rewarding.

THE CARIBBEAN, EARLIER THAN EXPECTED

Festive-season demand in the Caribbean is moving earlier, particularly at the upper end of the private villa market. According to Haute Retreats, by the middle of 2026 approximately 60 percent of its Caribbean festive-season villas had already been reserved for the holidays. Destinations such as St. Barts and Turks & Caicos continue to attract strong interest, especially from travelers seeking private estates capable of accommodating extended families and larger groups without sacrificing privacy or service.

For these travelers, planning ahead is less about simply securing accommodation and more about securing a highly specific experience. The most desirable estates are limited, and the combination of location, bedroom configuration, staffing, privacy, waterfront access, and holiday availability can narrow the field considerably. A villa may be beautiful, but if it cannot support the way a family wants to gather, entertain, retreat, or move through the week, it may not be the right fit.

This is where thoughtful curation becomes more valuable than sheer inventory. A traveler may technically have access to thousands of villas around the world, but only a small number may genuinely align with the needs of a particular holiday. In the most competitive travel periods, the advantage lies not in seeing more options, but in identifying the few that truly make sense.

A COLLECTION BUILT AROUND DISCERNMENT

The Haute Retreats destination collection spans some of the world’s most desirable private-travel markets, but the company’s value lies in more than geography alone. At the highest level of luxury hospitality, the right property is not simply the most impressive one on paper; it is the one that feels intuitively suited to the people staying there. The success of a private villa experience is often found in that sense of fit, when the house, setting, staff, and pace of the itinerary come together so naturally that the stay feels almost inevitable.

That sense of ease depends on judgment. The staff must understand when to be present and when to recede, the itinerary must offer enough structure to create memorable experiences without overwhelming the traveler, and the property itself must support the rhythm of the group rather than dictate it. A larger villa is not always a better villa, just as a fuller itinerary does not necessarily create a richer journey. At this level, excess can quickly become distraction if it is not carefully considered.

This is where Haute Retreats’ emphasis on discernment becomes especially relevant. The company’s role is not simply to present more choices, but to refine them, removing what is unnecessary in order to reveal what is most appropriate. In a market where abundance is easy to display, true luxury increasingly rests in thoughtful editing: the ability to understand what a traveler genuinely needs, what will enhance the experience, and what is best left out.

RECOGNITION IN A CROWDED MARKET

In a competitive luxury travel landscape, Haute Retreats has earned a level of recognition that reflects both the scale of its portfolio and the consistency of its service. The company has received Luxury Lifestyle Awards distinctions for three consecutive years, from 2024 through 2026, including honors for luxury villa rental and ultra-luxury villa rental and concierge services. It is also a 2026 Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards nominee in the Homestays & Villa Rentals category and maintains a reported 5.0 rating on Trustpilot, reinforcing the strength of its reputation among travelers.

That credibility extends beyond awards. Haute Retreats is an accredited member of the American Society of Travel Advisors and participates in the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, where founder Sabrina Piccinin is an honorary member. These affiliations place the company within a broader professional network shaped by service standards, industry accountability, and the evolving expectations of sophisticated travelers.

Yet in the private hospitality sector, reputation is ultimately built through experience rather than recognition alone. Many of the company’s highest-tier clients value discretion and privacy, meaning their loyalty may never appear publicly through testimonials, social media posts, or reviews. For that reason, repeat business can often reveal more than any accolade. Haute Retreats reports an 80 percent guest return rate, a figure that speaks to something awards cannot fully capture: the trust required for a traveler to return, once again, to the same company with their time, family, privacy, and expectations in its care.

WHAT LUXURY FEELS LIKE NOW

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Haute Retreats is that its philosophy arrives at a moment when the meaning of luxury itself is shifting. For decades, luxury travel was defined by visible abundance: the suite, the pool, the yacht, the view, the bottle waiting on ice. Those elements still matter, and at the highest levels they can be extraordinary, but today’s most discerning travelers increasingly understand that amenities are only the surface of an experience. The deeper luxury lies in how seamlessly everything comes together and how little effort the guest is required to expend in order to enjoy it.

True refinement is often found in the absence of friction. It is privacy without isolation, service without intrusion, access without complication, and the comfort of knowing that every detail has been anticipated without feeling managed. It is a family gathered in one place without any one person having to orchestrate the week, and a destination experienced with enough structure to feel cared for while preserving the freedom to move entirely at one’s own pace. In this sense, luxury becomes less about excess and more about the quality of ease.

The finest hospitality does not continually announce the work behind it. Instead, it allows the guest to remain inside the experience rather than becoming aware of the systems supporting it. This is where Sabrina Piccinin’s observation feels especially precise: “Luxury, at its highest level, is invisible.” The room is ready, the chef already understands the preferences of the household, the car arrives at the right moment, and the villa feels as though it was chosen specifically for the people who have just stepped inside it.

When hospitality is delivered at this level, the complexity disappears from view and what remains is a feeling of effortless belonging. For a brief period, the traveler is freed from planning, coordinating, anticipating, and correcting. Life simply unfolds with greater ease, and that may be the most contemporary definition of luxury of all.
