I had the magnificent honor of connecting with talented luxury fashion designer Natalie Friesen and her world-famous jazz musician husband David Friesen during Portland Fashion Week 2024 where I had the privilege of introducing her and her incredible collection to the audience, as well as her husband, who delighted everyone with playing live music during the show. Afterward, I was invited to their lovely home for tea and we discussed the creation of a gown for me to wear on the red carpet that would incorporate the input of my friend, styling veteran Edward Nashen, who’s worked with Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Christian Dior, Guy Laroche, Karl Lagerfeld, Valentino, Christian Lacroix, and Jean Paul Gaultier, just to name a few. Natalie, with some direction from Mr. Nashen, didn’t just create one gorgeous gown that I could proudly wear on the red carpet, which I did to the 52nd Annual Annie Awards, she surprised me with two!
Charis: Natalie, I love the way you presented the dresses to me, which were in separate boxes with specific typed-out instructions. It was so creative and thoughtful. Can you please tell me about your process of how you created the dresses, what inspired the designs, and your decision to present them to me how you did?
Natalie: Thank you, lovely Charis, for allowing me to share this amazing story!
I remember, Charis, during our conversation at my home, that you loved the Old Hollywood style when we discussed my making a silver gown for you for the red carpet. To gain even more insight into how I might design a gown that embodied Old Hollywood style, you connected me with Mr. Edward Nashen, a famous stylist and costume historian.

Using examples from movies and architectural masterpieces, Edward immersed me in the glorious times of the formation of the City of Angels and shared much about the spirit of the era of the "Golden Age of Hollywood". He very kindly offered to help with the choice of fabric for the gown I wanted to design for you and directed me to a top fabric store in New York City, where he resides. Edward is a wonderful person, easy and pleasant to collaborate with. Many thanks to Him!
The result of our tripartite discussion should have been a silver dress, but when I received the fabric, I immediately saw an issue–the right side of the fabric was not silver, but a dark sea blue that appeared as shimmering granite. God's plan for this project differed from what I had planned! I told Edward this, and we decided I would keep the fabric and sew a gown—a glorious navy blue sculpture!
Feeling an irrepressible desire to create a silver dress anyway, and remembering the phrases "liquid silver" and "futuristic style" from our discussion, I went to a wonderful fabric store in my city, Portland, Oregon, and created a second gown. It was fun and challenging, but I'm an engineer and know the qualities of melting silver!
I wanted to surprise you, Charis, because you didn’t expect two dresses, so I packed them in separate boxes so that neither the dresses nor the airy elements of the decoration would lose their shape during the journey from Portland to Los Angeles.
I wrote instructions for unpacking and asked you to shoot a video, from which I enjoyed watching the expression of surprise on your beautiful face.
Charis: Has this process changed the way you work as a designer or inspired any new direction with your work, and if so, how?
Natalie: For sure! I started to look at fashion design not only as a tailor but also as an inventor. After this experience, I gained confidence that my education and knowledge in different areas would allow me to set ambitious goals in fashion design for myself, and my multifaced skill set would allow me to realize them.
Charis: Strong architectural components characterize your exceptionally well-built designs. Can you share more about your skill set and background that brought you to where you are today with creating products of such high quality?
Natalie: It so happened in my life that in addition to the School of Design, Construction and Modeling of Clothes and School of Artistic Hand and Machine Knitting, I graduated from the Polytechnic University with a degree in Mining Engineering.
I also studied at the American Color Alliance Beauty for All Seasons, Inc., the discipline of Coloristics, and received the Color Analyst certificate. I also have an Image Consultant Certificate from the Ukrainian TV and Radio Broadcasting Institute.
I’m also an academic painter, and I very much enjoy painting on the clothes I create. I just love making sculptures, and my favorite material is iron.

This is not a complete list of my education and hobbies, but only those that relate to fashion design.
I started sewing and designing when I was three years old, helping my beloved grandmother, who was an excellent seamstress. So, I have a lot of experience in crafts!
Charis: Each piece you make is one-of-a-kind, a genuine work of art. Can you please share why you only make one of each design?
Natalie: It’s simple. I have enough creative ideas that I don’t feel compelled to repeat creating a design. Also, every individual is unique, and I think everyone who feels his/her uniqueness deserves a one-of-a-kind piece of apparel. I also believe there is only one Gold Proportion for every garment which makes it outstanding.
Charis: You also designed a gown recently for renowned actress Dyan Cannon. Can you tell us a little about that process and what you created for her?
Natalie: Dyan Cannon is a sweetheart and my dear sister-in-law. Knowing her light and joyful spirit, it was easy to design for her. I recently designed a bell-shaped dress for her, which was asymmetrical, with slightly open shoulders, made of light, airy fabric that holds its shape. This is so much like Dyan: fragile and strong. And the color I chose was pure, snow white! It's her!
Charis: What’s next for you? Do you have plans for upcoming designs or collections, and, if so, can you share?
Natalie: As for collections, last year, I was obsessed with creating a collection of evening gowns. Which debuted at Portland Fashion Week 2024. Now, I’m stocking denim in different colors to make a casual style collection with a lot of handmade old craft inclusions. As a firm supporter of slow fashion, I consider denim a durable, all-season fabric ideal for long-term wear.

Charis: Can you please share your favorite styling tips with our readers?
Natalie: Sure! To be authentically stylish, you need to express your inner world via your garments. These three simple tips formed the basis of the slogan for my company, DigFashion:
• Dig deep
• Identify yourself
• Go show it!
My brand’s clothes are designed to be a continuation of a client’s personality. Clothes are our messenger, our non-verbal communicator with the outside world. They should reflect our current mood, intentions, and readiness for certain actions. Be bold! Be honest with yourself! Be stylish!
Charis: Please share with our readers how they might connect with you so you can create a special piece for them, or where they might go to shop your collections.
Natalie: I would like to invite everyone to my website, mydigfashion.com, where you can not only view at my collections but also purchase pieces. Keep in mind that I only make unique garments, so you can only purchase pieces in the size I’ve created them in from my website. My Instagram account is @mydigfashion, and my YouTube channel is "DigFashion | fashion designer Natalie Friesen." I can be messaged via my social media accounts or contacted via email at digfashion@post.cz.
Charis: Thank you so much, Natalie, for my beautiful dresses and for taking the time for this interview. I wish you and your husband David continued success!
Natalie: Thank you very much, dear Charis, for this great interview and the opportunity to share some fashion stories with the lovely readers of this wonderful magazine. A special thanks to you for wearing the dark blue gown on the red carpet! I'm looking forward to seeing you wear the silver gown I’ve named “Melting Silver” on a red carpet in the future!
