BACKYARD BLISS: DESIGNING A SUMMER EVERYONE WILL REMEMBER

BY EGW GLOBAL MAGAZINE Summer 2025

This summer, the best memories may not require a plane ticket or a packed itinerary—they might unfold right in your own backyard. In a season that so often races past us, there’s quiet magic in choosing to slow down and savor the simple joys of home. Whether it’s flipping pancakes on the porch at sunrise, or watching fireflies blink to life as a movie plays under string lights, summer at home can be every bit as rich as a trip away—perhaps even more so.

Mornings start gently. Set the tone with rituals that invite everyone to ease into the day: pancakes made outside on a griddle, smoothies crafted from farmer’s market fruit, or a barefoot garden walk with a mug of something warm in hand. For families, create a “breakfast porch club” with rotating roles—one morning the kids pick toppings, the next someone reads a silly poem aloud.

As the sun climbs higher, the backyard becomes a canvas for creativity. Fold-out tables, a few baskets filled with paints or markers, and a shaded corner can inspire spontaneous masterpieces. For children, a garden scavenger hunt (with simple prizes like popsicles or “first pick” of the hammock) adds an element of exploration. Adults can join in or simply enjoy the sound of laughter and birdsong as the soundtrack of the day.

In the heart of the afternoon, keep it relaxed. Giant jigsaw puzzles spread on picnic blankets, bocce ball, beanbag toss, or even a pop-up lemonade stand where kids mix flavors like mint, watermelon, and classic lemon. Add a fan and some good books in a shady spot, and let the day unfold.

But when evening comes—this is where the magic deepens. Transform your space with string lights draped across trees or pergolas, lanterns set along the path, and citronella candles glowing like little sentinels of summer. Host a backyard movie night with classic films and comfy pillows, or set up glow-in-the-dark ring toss and sparklers. Pull out a star map for impromptu stargazing, or gather around a fire pit for stories and s’mores.

Backyard bliss isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s a choice to turn ordinary moments into memories through thoughtfulness, creativity, and a bit of whimsy. In the end, it’s not about where you went this summer—it’s about how deeply you stayed.
